Types of flooding

  1. Rising water after heavy rain. A risk to inland areas.
  2. Moving water creates force. Found near rivers.
  3. Overtopping. When dams or other flood controls are opened.
  4. Flash flooding, a result of a slow thunderstorm and excess rainfall.
  5. Widespread flood damage can be cause by storms dropping a lot of rain on the coast and moving inland to continue destruction.

Factors that play into floods are:

  • Duration-if waters are moving through or they are trapped.
  • Depth-waters more than 3 feet create pressure on walls and push them to collapse
  • Velocity-the speed at which the water is traveling.
  • Water Condition-the waters are often dirty or contaminated

Although having property on high grounds can be better, it's not always going to be safe from the water if the water is trapped and the level continues to rise. Do not assume your property is 100% safe from flooding.
